Zwy Milshtein

Artists > Zwy Milshtein Biography

Born in Moldavia in 1934.

A text by Frédéric Altman (curator of 'Château de Carros' - the Contemporary art museum in Carros) on Milshtein / Nice, July 1994:

"Zwy Milshtein brings to his painting his wanderings and his beliefs. A man of convictions, he travels around the world of art at his rythm, outside strategic moves and fashion fluctuations. His pictorial style is totally personal because it pours out of his life. It is also an exulting poem which takes off at the roots of the world, in the Altamira, Lascaux caves where the first man inscribed for the first time signs and graffitis on the wall-shelters of the caves. Milshtein is not a decorator-painter: he paints because within him, painting is a vital and pressing necessity; an act of love. His painting accompanies his life, it is also a way for him to share his knowledge and memory in the tracks of the exodus. Milshtein's work is a cry of silence, a work which witnesses, which strengthens our vision, both a log book and a diary:"I consider my painting to be expressionist, influenced by painters such as Bosch, Brueghel, Goya and Soutine". Distinguished elders who have left a timeless and indelible trace within the history of painting."
